The inflammatory phase of various pathological conditions such as acute infections (Luthold et al., 2007), traumas (Akgün et al., 1998), burns (Coombes et al., 1980) and myocardial ischemia (Kittl et al., 1992) involves transient and moderate changes in serum lipid concentrations. Despite the extensive evidence indicating serum lipids are altered in P. falciparum malaria (Baptista et al., 1996; Al-Omar et al., 2010; Jacob, 2014), similar information about P. vivax malaria from clinical practice is scarce (Krishna and Chandrika, 2009).

[14] initially reported that, in the 5 years prior to diagnosis, patients with RA had significant decreases in total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C levels over time compared with a control population, despite lower rates of statin use. These findings were consistent with studies showing lower cholesterol levels in the setting of active inflammation from other causes, including the post-surgical state, critical illness, and sepsis [15–17]. Follow-up work in the same RA cohort of over 600 patients described a “lipid paradox”, in which lower TC and LDL-C levels were not only associated with active inflammation in RA patients, but also with higher rather than lower risk of CVD [18].

2015, American Journal of CardiologyCitation Excerpt :Our data showed that HDL-C levels are correlated inversely with hs-CRP levels and directly with serum albumin levels. These findings are in agreement with other results reported in patients with other conditions associated with inflammation, including critically ill patients, where it was observed that HDL-C levels have a strong inverse correlation with levels of inflammatory cytokines such as hs-CRP, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor.18–20 The precise cause of reduced HDL-C levels in these inflammatory states remains unknown; it might be attributed to several inflammatory mediators known to suppress HDL-C.7 In our study population, the multivariate analysis showed that factors associated with very low levels of HDL are consistent with those reported by Roe et al.14 However, our study also highlighted that biomarkers of inflammation (albumin levels of ≤3.5 mg/dl and hs-CRP levels of ≥10 mg/L) were strong independent predictors of very low levels of HDL-C in the ACS spectrum.
