    In vitro studies have demonstrated that physical factors, such as shear stress, mechanical stretch, and mechanical pressure, alter ET-1 gene expression and release by endothelial cells.16 Subsequently, circulating ET-1 levels in the coronary vessel distal to the target lesion and in the coronary sinus have been demonstrated to be significantly increased8,17,18 after coronary interventions, and the increase in ET-1 level correlates with the applied mechanical stress during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.8 Thus, the ET-1 level may be considered as a marker of the severity of the induced vessel trauma.
